du plaisir de se tourner les pouces

Animated Short Film: 3min10, 2020

"March 2020, the first lockdown begins, and as I pace around my room, time seems to distort and stretch. This experimental animated film is a mental peregrination, a waking dream, a knot of thoughts that never unravels."

I directed this short-film as I was nearing the end of my university studies, having explored both audiovisual arts and fine arts. I used this precious times to explore an array of different fields of research, mediums, and creative possibilities—an approach I carried into this short film, much like how I approach my artistic practice in general: as a laboratory of experimentation, exploration, and introspection.

The initial idea was to capture slices of this new, adventure-less, interaction-deprived, disconcerting, and solitary daily life—slow and lingering. What may now seem normalized, after more than a year of reflecting on this health, political, and emotional situation (as I believe the three are interconnected) caused by COVID-19. This film also sparked other reflections and projects around time that no longer passes, and especially the idleness and pleasure that can be found in it. I first collected the images with an almost curatorial approach before deciding to "do something" with them—as if they weren't complete on their own; grouping them into this little film. I then entrusted the sound design to Léopold Cordier, whose highly experimental approach to musical composition I know and admire. I fully trusted him with the music for this film, and I believe he accompanied it brilliantly.
