Les Bercés

Les Bercés is a series of linocut prints I started when I returned to Alexandria. I mostly wanted to get away from the predominant postcard-like representations, either architectural, historical or cultural of the city ; thus focusing more on how Alexandria feels than how it formally looks.

The series thinks the city in terms of lines, shapes, positive or negative spaces ; inspired by the movements of the breathing city : the calm and the chaos, the screams and the silences, the free and the constrained, the dull and the violent, the full and then empty. The imagery I feature in Les Bercés, as a dreamlike vision of Alexandria, is using a range of symbolic elements and patterns questioning the notions of anonymity and intimacy, individual freedoms, policing and surveillance.

This project has been exhibited in:

- Alexandria Today in 6 Bab Sharq, Alexandria in 2022

- Frenzied in Bibliotheca Gallery, Sheikh Zayed in 2023

- SOS in Darb 1718, Cairo in 2023
