alexandrian sketchbook
Since July 2021, I’ve been compulsively documenting, through both writing and drawing, every day of mine. Somewhere between art- and life-practices, the Alexandrian sketchbook is ultimately my most important artistic project, now totaling over a thousand hand-scribbled pages. Meticulously crafted by recycling paper accumulated over the last few years, this large book, at the crossroads between a document, a diary, and an artist’s book, has ultimately fulfilled a number of functions: a tool of connection, meditation, and presence; a documentary record of my daily life in Alexandria; but also a therapeutic instrument, dealing more specifically with intimacy. I’ve placed all my flowers in it: my thoughts, ideas, and memories.
Over the years, in addition to the relatively procedural aspect of daily writing and drawing, a genuine archive of myself has been created in the process. It also provides relief from the anguish of disappearing memories: like a second memory that doesn’t fade or distort; these sketchbooks swollen with memories are a soothing presence in an anxiety-ridden day-to-day life.
